Four Spring Home Security Tips To Keep You Safe

With the weather warming up, the criminals will begin coming out again. In fact, home burglaries spike during the summer months. So Spring is the perfect time to review your home security and make some improvements in case you are one of the unfortunate homeowners targeted by these nasty crooks. Here is a handy checklist of things you can do around your home to beef up your security for summer.

1. Trim Back Your Landscaping

Criminals love to take cover behind bushes, shrubbery, and trees. This is more difficult to accomplish in the winter when the branches are bare. However, during the spring and summer when plants are lush, they can really take advantage. Take a walk around your property and think like a criminal. What bushes, shrubbery, and other landscape features could provide cover for these crooks? Where could they easily hide? Once you’ve identified these areas, you can trim back or remove these landscaping features.

2. Check Your Outdoor Lighting

Another way criminals can hide on your property is with the cover of darkness. Make sure your yard is well-lit. Start by checking all your existing outdoor lighting to make sure it is working correctly. Replace any burnt out bulbs and make sure the lighting is positioned correctly. Then determine if there is anywhere else you need to add lighting. Solar lights are very affordable and can be easily placed anywhere around your landscaping to light up pathways and dark corners.

3. Be Careful With Your Windows

When the weather gets nice, it’s natural to want to open your windows and let some fresh air in. Ideally, you’ll always keep your windows locked, but if you’d like to air out your home, just be smart about it. Make sure that there are no valuable items in the line of sight from your windows in case robbers are looking in. Also, don’t leave open and unlocked windows unattended. Only keep them open when you are home and nearby them. Also make sure to lock them before leaving your home or going to bed.

4. Have Your Security System Checked

Finally, have your home security system checked to make sure that it is working correctly and up-to-date with the most current technology. Security technology has evolved at a rapid pace and what once protected you last year, may not be effective at protecting you this year. Have all the lines, cameras, and storage devices checked to make sure they are working properly. If there are any issues, have them repaired immediately.
